I’ve always believed the hardest thing as an audio engineer, no matter how experienced you are, is having an incredible drum mix. The analog drums can make or break your entire drum mix. It’s not just about having the right drum heads, the right cymbals, the right player, the right microphones, but the actual room in which you are recording in as well. Let’s face it, if you want a professional studio recorded drum sound, you go to a professional studio, however, that could cost an arm and leg for musicians with a low budget.
When I was researching alternative methods to drum recording one of the plugins that I first discovered was Ocean Way, however their price point was over $800. A few years later, I stumble across Addictive Drums 2…and the quality of the drums were top notch.
I don’t blog about things I don’t use on a regular basis. So Addictive Drums 2 has been my go to plugin for recording drums. If you have access to an electronic drum kit (such as the Alesis DM 10X) you can plug it in via USB and use it to trigger the Addictive Drums library.
I’m not that great of a drummer, I’m what you call “serviceable”, so my lack of confidence in recording drums tends to leave me using other methods of the plugin. I’ve had to even resort to using my keyboard as well to play drums on, but Addictive Drums comes with tons of MIDI Paks with sampled professional drumming you can click and drag into your DAW of your choice.
